Stereotypes Sell

StereoTypes Sell

The man (Justin Bieber) is stereotyped as a sex object which makes the target audience appear more to young girls.

This magazine cover creates a target audience for older men. The lady on the front cover of the magazine is made to look like a sex object which attracts the male attention.

This cover has a target audience for black males, the camera angle is looking below him which makes us think he's big. The stereo types for black males is usually the thought and opinion in thinking they're; Druggies and violent. On the front cover of this magazine he is smoking.

The target audience for this magazine is aimed at young girls. The 'half naked' male on the front of the cover appeals to them. The magazine could also appeal to young men/boys aswell, this is because boys are inspired about the muscles and would look at them as if they're an idol.

Mock DIRT 2018

Identify the organisation that 'age rates' video games in the UK.

Video Standards Council Regulators Board

Explain 2 Reasons why a film company would release a video game linked to a film.

A film company would bring out a game linked to a film to promote it, kids love playing games online and therefore the company would get more money as its a different medium.

Using a video game to promote a film brings in a large audience, if people decide they like the game they will go see the movie and if they like the movie they will buy the game which will give them more publicity.

Explain 2 uses of gratifications of video games using blumer and katz theory. Refer the The Lego Movie Video Game to support your answer.

Blumer and Katz argued that there are many uses and gratifications that make the media successful. Personal Identity, Entertainment, Relationships and Information are four types of gratifications.

The Lego Movie uses entertainment, The Lego Movie video games were created to pull in the reader. Making a game that links to the film makes it eye gripping for people who have watched the film and of course to entertainment. It would be especially entertaining for young children as it has bright colours which represents the target audience.

It also uses Personal Identity; This helps us to consider who we are as individuals. The Lego Movie Follows a story line of an ordinary builder who turned out to be the 'special one'. It also helps people to find ideas and values to identify with. For example they can identify with Emmet as he's a hero and then can see the difference between right or wrong.

The Lego Movie also puts relationships into consideration, there is so much that happens within the movie which gives us things us to discuss and share with our friends, and also to share different views.

The Lego Movie video games provide us with a lot of information and facts about the movie. People want to know information and or what to take pleasure in knowing. The game begins to provide us with opinions and even questions and therefore we find out new information by speaking about it.

Analyse how genre codes have been used in The Lego Movie poster campaign to appeal to a family audience.

Action poster genre codes have been used in The Lego Movie poster campaign by using the five things that make posters appealing; They have a bold image on the front with a Bold colour palette,Typography, The Logo, The Credits and The title.

The Lego Movie is an action film, we know this because of the image that appears on the front. They also have used the right sort of imagery for the action genre in the terms of setting and characters. Also, by picking a good pose for each of the characters to be in gives us an idea of what there personality is like. For example the cast on the front of the image running away from the dangers, this follows action genre codes and attracts the audience who thinks this looks exciting.

The images on each poster also has different stereotypes that represents different people in the audience. For Example Wyldstyle doesn't fit to the typical 'Hollywood Girl; she has black hair with bright colour stripes which shows us she's not a typical "hollywood girl". This represents modern female audiences who want an interesting character to relate too. While Emmet doesn't look like a typical hero, he looks like a stereo typical guy and he also looks scared which modern males can relate to.

The Lego Movie appears to a family audience, They use a bright colour palette which brings attention to younger kids and also adults. By Giving us the image on the poster draws in a target audience because they would want to see what happens and the audience would feel the need to watch it.

Another is the colour palette, They use bright colours to catch attention at younger kids. They used; Red, Blue, Orange, Green and Yellows as well. This is good to get the attention at families because the bright colour will attract the kids, and because of that it will make the parents want to go as well.

Uses And Gratifications

Uses And Gratifications

LO:Blumler & Katz researched how and why people select certain media products over others

They came up with 4 main rules:

  • Entertainment: offers distraction from the world.
  • Personal Identity: helps us consider who we are;what ideas and values we identify with.
  • Relationships: we find things we can share and discuss with others.
  • Information: new information we want to know or take pleasure in knowing.

The Lego Movie: Poster Campaign

The Lego Movie: Poster Campaign

LO: To explain the effectiveness of the campaign; to analyse using uses & Gratification theory.

Lego Movie Teaser Posters:

They released over 20 teaser posters with a strong brand image (Relating to lego). The characters in the posters include stereotypes but also attempt to reflect the context of greater gender equality.

For Example:

WyldStyle is stereotyped to look like an emo (Black hair with coloured stripes).

Stereotype - A widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing.

Why can stereotypes be a good thing in films?
  • Mix with other genders and become more flexible about stereotypes.
  • Become preoccupied with their future careers, as well as appearance.
  • Want to learn gender-based expectations for how to behave in romantic and sexual situations.
  • Choose what they want to watch and are willing to discuss abstract ideas (and don't want to be lectured to).
  • Gives you a role model

  • Blue Colour Palette
  • Male as active (construction worker)
  • Masculinity - Hair and High- vis jacket
  • Yellow 'Lego' iconic figures
  • Female as passive
  • Femininity- Hair, Makeup, Freckles and Lashes
  • Urban environment- Tracks, Towerblocks and Contruction.
Exam Style Question:

The Lego Movie posters use stereotypes to create representations that appeal to the films target audience and are easily understood.

We can clearly see that Lord Business is the villain. We know that because; his angry facial expression and the colours used in his character poster. The colours used in his poster is red. Red usually connotes blood and is usually themed around evil. The target audience will feel represented by this because family audiences would like a fight between the good and evil and its also something everyone will understand.

Wyldstyle in her character poster isn't the typical 'hollywood woman' and isn't the usual 'hollywood woman stereotype'. We know this because of the look of her appearance. She's got black hair and brightly coloured stripes in her hair. Even though Wyldstyle comes across as looking like an 'Emo' she's also sexy. The lashes and Makeup make her come across more girly and feminine. Overall her character will appeal to woman because she's not a victim, usually girls are the ones being saved. It gives girls a positive role model.
