I think my magazine fits 'The mainstream', In the magazine they show products which people would use each day which fits perfectly. I would say the lifestyle category is 'Groupies'. Especially in college you want to fit in with everyone so reading a teenage girl magazine with all the latest and in trend bands they can fit in with everyone else. The social value group i think which fits the magazine is 'Contendted Conformers'. Which is again the idea of fitting in with the crowd.0

The magazine also contains a USP which is free a CD. The CD is called 'Teen Spirit" which is an intertextual link to a nirvana song, Smells Like Teen Spirit. Using this helps us to understand the genre in which this magazine is aimed towards. Nirvana was a band which played in the 1990s and was an American rock band. The band is not current as the lead singer, Kurt Cobain committed suicide. This connotes that the magazine genre shown is rock and is aimed for older males as they would understand the older bands.

The minor cover lines also use the same font as the main cover line but it also has a mix of block caps. Which also connotes to the target audience as male. The minor cover line shows that the font is contemporary and is also recent. Using this font attracts people who like to know the latest bands. The magazine also offers Social interactions. By doing this it shows us the genre is Rock or even classic rock. The image is taken as a front face shot, It looks as if he's directly looking at us which is using audience address. Using a photo of Dave Grohl on the front image, also attracts females as well. Females would also buy this because of the fit guy on the front, as it would be someone they would be attracted too. The text placement is around the face which highlights the face on the cover.

The magazine also has a Puff. The magazine is claiming that is has 159 reviews. Representation
Learning Objective:
  • To create a magazine cover showing an understanding of representation.

We have shown the genre which is rock by the dull background. Rock magazines are usually darker although the magazine isn't finished so we haven't had the chance to add in the colour which would be red, yellow etc.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
8/11/12

We've shown genre by the features which are used on the magazine. We used the colours Yellow and red to show we've created a rock magazine. The
dull filter used on the image also shows the rock. We made up some different artists which are shown on the magazine. We linked the magazine to target audience by the image on the front. Males would be attracted
to this as there is a female which they may find attractive. It also goes for woman as they might also find personal identity with the woman on the front
who's playing guitar.

Bruno Mars - It Will Rain

The first image shown of Bruno Mars comes from outside of his window, The window acts as a frame in the music video, separating him from the outside world. In the second image we start to understand the meaning which is conveyed, the rain suggests heart break and something bad has occurred in his life. The camera angles are low angles which shows sad emotion.

Promote An Artist:

Katy Perry - Roar

This music video would promote Katy Perry hugely. In the second image she's portrayed as being a strong and independent woman. The tattoos also help us to see that, it also suggests she's rebellious. Even though she comes across as this powerful woman, she's also seen as sexy by the audience.

Promote The Producer:

Paloma Faith - Picking Up The Pieces

This music video would promote the producer. Some clips are more film like, for example when she's in focus and he's not and the same the other way around. Media Language In Music Videos
Learning Objective:
  • To explore and analyse the use of media language in chosen case studies.
Analyse the media language in your music videos. How are they similar/different?

Beyonce - If i was a boy

In this music video Beyonce preforms but only a small duration of the video includes her singing while looking into the camera, by doing this it creates even more of a sadder effect as she's singing straight to the audeince. Within this music video there is naturalism to an extent, when they're inside the house and out on the streets which is a realistic atmosphere although monochrome of the black and white makes it less realistic and more dream like. This music video doesn't follow genre conventions. The genre is R&B which has elements of hip hop which are more upbeat and tend to have happier story lines. The editing does match the paste of the song, it all naturally fitting. At the beginning they've added diegetic sound when Beyonce was talking which gives a sadder effect to the music video. Although as the music video goes on there is another duration of them talking, this scene is probably the climax to the music video. Within the video there are no effects used and the transitions cut directly from scene to scene. The camera work is a documentary style and looks as if its been taken out of a film which links to the monochrome and the dream like reality of it. They've shown distinctive shots of people's faces to enhance the emotions they're feeling. The monochrome shows this is an emotional piece. This video promotes the values of being loyal in a relationship and how people are treated, and how this could be changed. It follows genre conventions of film and TV because its taken conventions used to make him and TV put it into the music video to enhance the effect given off.

Representation:

In this music video beyonce is represented as a heartbroken woman. The use of monochrome helps us to understand this. The black and white filter which is used shows her emotions and even though she puts on a brave face, we can tell she's hurting. In some scenes Beyonce is wearing a bra which suggests she is sexualised for a male audience. This music video shows how vulnerable and weak Beyonce is. Beyonce also wears makeup which connotes notion of femininity. This effects Beyonce's public image because she usually comes across as strong and independent whereas here she comes across as being vulnerable and heartbroken which we don't see often. Race has been represented in different ways within this music video, even though Beyonce is white the acted boyfriend was black. This implies that there is equal rights between both of them when how they feel within the relationship. In this music video sexuality has been assumed as being a straight couple. This music video doesn't represent teenager or and older generation as it comes in-between, they show the people in the music video as being responsible. They subvert it because Beyonce is doing what the typical stereotype man would be doing. The US society is represented because of the police outfit and the coffee shops, even though this also happens in the UK, its usually American thing. The genders shown within this music video are african american which also shows the genre R&B.

Bruno Mars - Uptown Funk

In this music video Bruno mars preforms to the camera throughout the whole music video, he does this to create an effect of him being cool and showing off his wealth. The camera angle is mostly below him making him seem stronger and powerful compares to the viewer. In this music video there is naturalism, a reason for this is because the clothes are natural aren't over the top for their setting which is in the middle of a street. Uptown funk does follow genre conventions because its upbeat and happy like the genre funk. Within the whole video there is no diegetic sound used because of the continuous clapping throughout the music video. The editing does match the pace of the song and there is no switches between performance and narrative as its all performance. No special effects are used and the transitions just cut straight from scene to scene. the camerawork is smooth and controlled within the whole of the music video which makes it seem as if its been pulled straight out of a film. They have added colour within the video but no vibrant popping colours which makes it de-saturated. This music video promotes being looking good and wearing jewellery and wearing expensive brands to show off wealth and to have an exciting social life. It follows genre conventions of a film because of the settings and the way its all acted out. It enhances the effect of the video and makes it seem more interesting.

Representation:

In this music video Bruno Mars is represented as a prosperous man. They also put him across as being young and conveying the message of being young and enjoying yourself.  His dancing gives off a cheerful vibe and also assumes his sexuality as heterosexual. His facial expressions are usually a smile which shows he approachable and friendly. This doesn't change Bruno Mars' public image as he usually comes across wealthy although most of his songs are about heartbreak, loving someone or loosing someone but this is different. Its about having fun and having the up to date trends and fashion and having a good social status. This music video has values in which it highlights, the idea of being young and having fun and not really caring what anyone says is conveyed across the music video. Race has been represented within the music video as there is a mixture, Bruno Mars is mixed race, this would represent the US society as being equal. Near the end of the music video the dark coloured males are shown playing the trumpet which is a typical stereotype for jazz bands. Other stereo types which are used are gang stereotypes as they play around with outfits and how they're all matching. Genders are represented in this music video because the video follows a group of men who are around 20-30. Woman in this video are shown as being sexualised for the male gaze, we don't see there faces but their shown as being the typical stereotype which would be skinny and she also has her cleavage out. In the music video the hats, glasses and jewellery are presented as being the attractive part of the video.

  • Uptown Funk is a saturated colour whereas Beyonce's video has the use of monochrome (makes it more serious)
  • Theres a humour in Uptown Funk - Stylised performance, costumes, the salon and curlers that is sharp in contrast to Beyonce's seriousness.
  • Uptown Funk applies camera shots that are intertextual of performance - Low angle, wide angle shots with emphasis movement towards the camera.
  • Beyonce uses camera work that connotes realism - Handheld camera, long lens street shots and shallow depth of focus.
Representation Similarities
  • Both represent love as a heterosexual relationship.
  • Both represent masculinity as sexually predatory.
  • Representations of America are of urban cities.
  • Men and Woman follow conventions - stereotypically attractive, young, thin and able bodied.
  • Beyonce presents stereotypes of masculine power and feminine victimhood but inverts them. By doing this it illustrates the damage they both do.
Representation Differences
  • Beyonce's representation of a powerful woman with agency contrasts with the explicit sexual objectification of woman in Uptown Funk.
  • Uptown Funk comments on sexuality and gender roles by a parody of the exaggerated machismo of the performer as he is seen in the salon.
  • Beyonce looks to a more serious criticism/message of gender relations.
  • Uptown Funk uses a range of body types and ages that constructs a humorous cartoon like message of inclusivity to the audience.
  • Beyonce uses a cast of conventionally attractive adult actors which adds unnecessary glamorous gloss on a serious message but allows the video to be consumed by her younger fanbase.

Exam Practice:

In music videos, editing is used to convey the different tones to match the song. In Uptown Funk, the producers  uses saturated colour. By doing this it suggests that he's conveying a message of having fun which differs from Beyonce's video as Bruno Mars isn't being serious. The different colours on the jackets of the performers are all bright prime colours have been emphasis to stand out against the grey, urban background. This suggests they're the main focus on the streets. In If I Was A Boy, the  producers. uses monochrome. By using this filter it implies she's conveying a message of being serious. Monochrome makes the music video stand out because it seems more dreamlike rather than realistic.

BBC Radio One Live Lounge
Learning Objective:

  • To explore how BBC Radio 1 meets its PSB remit and meets the needs of it's target audience.
Public Service Broadcasting

Public broadcasting includes radio, television and other electronic media outlets whose primary mission is public service. In much of the world, funding comes from the government, especially via annual fees charged on receivers. ... In some countries, public broadcasting is run by a single organization.

The public service broadcasters are those you can get for free on TV without box or cable: Channel 4, Channel 5 and the BBC. While all BBC public service television channel's are PSB channels, only the main channels of each of the other public service broadcasters have this status.

BBC Radio 1:

Their audience is addressed to people between the ages 15-29.  It targets a younger audience because of the language used, the presenters language is often informal and energetic and sometimes may include slang. They also use intertextual references to pop culture, like songs which appear in the charts.

Radio 1 is to entertain and engage a broad range of young listeners with a distinctive mix of contemporary music and peach. It's target audience is 15-29 year olds and should also provide some programming for younger teenagers.
It should offer a range of new music, support emerging artists - especially those from the UK- and provide a platform of live music.

Daytime - Should offer a mix of music, information and entertainment and use an extensive playlist to introduce unfamiliar established tracks.
In the evening specialist presenters, covering a broad range of musical genres, should support upcoming artists, assisting their growth and development.

BBC Radio 1: Remit

BBC Radio 1 has used a bright colour palette - the colours include; pink, purple, blue, peach and green. Which leans towards the genre pop. It leans towards the genre pop because the colour pallette is more vibrant, which is what you'll see more on pop. Although by using the green it also suggest's  the genre also could be rock. By using these vibrant colour's it makes the page seem more enthusiastic and fun, which gives a good impression to the audience and also its target audience. This leads to the target audience of 15-25 year olds because the website is very fresh which would appeal to them. This would represent BBC 1 as fresh and up to date, and the colour palette suggests its mature. This would appeal for more mature and sophisticated people.

They have used images of celebrities which would appeal to their 15-29 target audience. For example, George Ezra is featured on the website, who is also a pop artist and is also from the UK. By using popular artists it brings more attention to their content which might bring them more viewers, especially from the younger generation. The images on the page are made to stand out, and along with each image comes with a bold caption which will catch the audiences attention straight away. On the BBC Radio website, the image of bring me the horizon is seen as rebellious and represents the artist. In the image he's sticking his tongue out, holding up a peace sign and is covered in tattoos, the audience would see him as cheeky. The tattoos imply he's rebellious and also is independent.

They've branded Radio 1 by making it seem more fresh, the colour's are vibrant and in each section there is something else to browse through. For example there's different sections for featured artists, latest tracks, live music and mixes and podcasts. By using a range of sections it gives the audience more of a choice and also gives the audience a chance to browse new music - which they could enjoy.  The range would engage and entertain young listeners, the music used on the website includes distinctive mixes - which would give audience's more of a choice to choose their genre. By including live music this means Radio 1 encourages it's listeners to take part in music events like concerts.

Convergence:

The merging of previously distinct media technologies and forms due to digitisation and computer networking.

BBC Radio 1: The Live Lounge can be accessed via the commercial platform of VEVO.

What advantage if there for (1) the BBC (2) VEVO or (3) the audience?

This would be an advantage for the BBC because VEVO is a huge company, by using VEVO it can be reached on more platforms which means more people will view and see their content. This is a good thing because it means they would get more views from the audience which means they would get more pay, which means they can add in extra things on their website. It would also be an advance for VEVO because they will get a wider audience, if the audience was to browse the BBC website it means VEVO will be easily accessed and would have a wider streaming audience. On the BBC website the Live Lounge videos are only a certain amount of time, which means they will spend a lot more time on VEVO than they would on the BBC website. The advance for the audience would be more platforms in which they can access music. By having 2 platforms it means if one website was to crash there is an alternative. Both websites are different which means you can listen to a wide range of music. You can look at the latest music on VEVO and also BBC Radio 1.

What are the audience appeals of the Live Lounge?

One reason it appeals to the audience is the action which takes place within the Live Lounge. By featuring different artists it gives the show a much wider range of viewers. By using all different genre's for artists gives a bigger impression and people will tune in to see their favourite bands performing. Another reason it appeals to the audience is the platforms in which they use to stream The Live Lounge. By using a range of platforms it gives everyone a chance to watch it, as social media is growing, more people will be able to access it online - if they didn't listen to the radio. By streaming it on things like youtube, it means younger people can watch it and also see their favourite artists preform. The Live Lounge is very different to other radio shows, which means more people will be more willing to watch it as it won't be like everything else which means it isn't boring. The covered songs would appeal because no one would of heard it before, by the artists. This makes it completely new and fresh. You're also discovering new music.

Why is it different to other radio shows?

It's different because they use acoustic instruments instead of electric. Usually artists practice before preforming whereas with The Live Lounge, they don't practise. The cover aspect is new as not many radio shows allow the artist to do covers as they usually do their own songs.
